Good News

Isn’t it fun to share good news? Georgia O’Keefe said, “What is art anyway? Art is sharing good news. It makes people feel fantastic.”

Researchers from Brigham Young University suggest sharing positive experiences, a.k.a. “good news,” can lead to heightened well-being, more energy, and even generate joy. Sharing good news lifts our spirits and gives others a chance to feel happy alongside us. Nobel Peace Prize winner, Albert Schweitzer, got it right when he said, “Happiness is the only thing that multiplies when you share it.”

Why then are we often reluctant to talk about our good fortunes? Could it be we don’t want to show off? Or possibly we feel guilty about good things that happen to us when so many others suffer? Or perhaps we’re afraid we’ll jinx our blessings?

I’ve pondered these questions lately and concluded that, as an artist, I’m responsible for helping change things—develop ideas, explore possibilities, and express feelings that can lead to transformation. In this case, model sharing my good news, hoping you will share yours.

So here goes:  Starting in July, 80Six Gallery, in Tryon, NC will represent my work. My first series is entitled Slice of Summer. To me, that’s a big deal. Actually, it’s a really big deal. Why? I’m convinced I connect to YOU via my art. Sure I can paint in my studio, with Lucie as my only onlooker. But that’s selfish. Isn’t it? Instead, I hope when you view my artwork you feel fantastic. I hope you see what can be, instead of what is.

And if you do, that’s really, really good news.
